Apple Announces iPhone SE for $399

Today a long time Apple design receives a new polish. The classic body of the 4.7” screen that has been around since the iPhone 6 is now the iPhone SE. Though that isn’t a bad thing at all. While somethings stay the same with the design, not all is as it appears.

The Apple iPhone SE

The iPhone SE name has been very popular since it’s release in 2016. Every year since then people have been looking for a small, cost effective iOS device to be released. Yet, Apple has since to deliver one. That has now changed today. Apple has announced the iPhone SE for preorder on Friday, April 17th and in store a week later on Friday, April 24th. 7As mentioned above it retains a similar look to the iPhone body with a 4.7” screen with the glass body similar to the iPhone 8. This is due to the wireless charging now introduced to the SE line. Along with physical appearances it also features a single camera design in classic black, white and (PRODUCT)RED. It will keep the standard water resistance with a IP67 rating leading up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Touch ID is still there located at the bottom of the phone as a reliable, old friend. Everything about the iPhone SE is familiar though changes under the glass cover have been made.

Powering the iPhone SE is the same A13 Bionic Chip that first came to the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro in September. This system on a chip has a 8-core Neural Engine, two Machine Learning Controllers to balance both power and efficiency. Apple’s A13 chip powers the new camera experience with a 12-megapixel f/1.8 A aperture wide angle lens. It will even feature the Portrait mode from a single system similar to the iPhone XR did last device cycle. Motion is recorded in 4K up to 60fps and extended dynamic range is recorded up to 30fps. iOS 13 also features built in video editing to make sure the video you do record looks it absolute best.

How much will the new iPhone SE set you back if you are in the market? It will again be available for preorder Friday, April 17th with devices in store a week later on Friday, April 24th. When you select a model it will give options of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. These will start at $399 go to $449 then finally $549 respectively.

Personally, I was hoping Apple would have a fun, small size iPhone in a 4” body like the iPhone 5,5S and previous SE. Though I understand the reasons for why this would no longer be an option to the consumers. I am excited that Apple will remain competitive in a market where users are not looking to spend over $1000 for a device. I will allow more flexibility for a lower cost of entry to the iOS ecosystem.
